The Origin Of Tengah

The Tengah region, located in northwestern Singapore, is a vast area bordered by Lim Chu Kang Road, Choa Chu Kang Road, Ama Keng to the north, and the Tengah River to the east. Its historical significance stems from the British Royal Air Force establishing an important airfield, RAF Tengah, there in the early 20th century. Today, this military airfield remains operational under the Republic of Singapore Air Force and is now known as Tengah Airbase.

Tengah, originally founded in 1853 as Teng Chu Kang, traces its origins to a surat sungei granted that year to a man named Teng Ah Ting (whose name has also been recorded in various forms such as Teng Ah Tong, Ting An Tong, Tan Ah Tong, and Ten Ah). He received permission to farm land bordering Chua Chu Kang to the east, Wu Heng Kang (Goh Chu Kang) to the south, and Sun Li Kang (Lim Chu Kang) to the west. His farm was located next to an unnamed tributary of the Kranji River.

Teng Ah Ting, a kangchu, became known colloquially as Teng-Ah, and his farm was called Teng Chu Kang, or sometimes recorded as Teng Ah Kang. The river beside his farm was named the Teng-Ah River, which eventually evolved into the name Tengah.
